Matte Paintings for Games, Television & Film.
I’ve always loved Matte Paintings, even as a young lad catching my first Hollywood Epic and wondering aloud “how did they do that?”. It was when I first saw The 10 Commandments and could not believe what I was seeing, a glimpse into the Biblical Past that blew my mind. That movie magic moment started a career journey for me to discover as many tricks as I could and to learn how to conjure the magic that took me on that first trip to Egypt.
I’ve been exceptionally lucky to have studied Matte Painting on the job at Zoic, Pixomondo, Halon, Create and Sony. These wonderful Studios gave me a shot and put me in touch with Legends in the field to study under. I learned a great deal of photo-real painting from Syd Dutton and Fumi on Red Riding Hood as well mastering rapid iteration for an on the fly production of Twisted Metal with Andres Martinez. Working alongside Jeremy Melton on the fast paced productions of Fringe, True Blood and Falling Skies was where I hit my stride of whipping up weekly Mattes for phenomenal science fiction series’ and fantasy shows. Lastly, I was very lucky work with Ken Nakada at Pixomondo on some Matte work for Sony and Alfa Romeo; it’s always wonderful to meet painters that love that medium and I couldn’t have asked for a better group to look up to.
The skills learned on these early productions made me a more complete Concept Artist and Art Director as I took on the challenges of AR, VR and Beyond at Niantic Labs; creators of Pokemon Go. I’ve done Matte work since for Films and Stage shows with Pixomondo and Cirque du Soliel, projection matte painting for attractions with Halon as well as sequential boards and animatics for the Mass Effect Ride. These wonderful experiences have only whetted my appetite for blending traditional skills with state of the art storytelling and I can’t wait to make new artwork for you.
Thank you for taking a look and cheers to movie magic in all it’s forms!
Excelsior!
